Workshop: NNSP Capacity Building Networks – Engineering, processes and real-space imaging

18-12-06 11:00 - 18-12-07 13:00
Hotel Park Inn in Copenhagen
Address: Hotel Park Inn, Engvej 171, DK-2300 Copenhagen S, Denmark

You, your postdocs and PhD-students are cordially invited to contribute to the 24-hour workshop “NNSP Capacity Building Networks – Engineering, processes and real-space imaging” within the NordForsk neutron program. A major part of the programme of the workshop will be based on the contributed abstracts and emphasize on discussion and networking, so it will be an excellent opportunity for you to present and discuss your activities within this topic, Engineering, processes and real-space imaging.

Neutron scattering is excellent in performing non-destructive in-depth imaging of materials and components. Diffraction provides an excellent tool for determining grains, texture, composition and microscopic strain. Scattering is used to investigate complex flow, phase separations, sintering, welding and other engineering processes. During a 24-hour workshop from lunch to lunch we will bring together academia and industry from the Nordic and Baltic countries working within the field connecting research communities across the region to build critical mass. Focus will be on topics related to the two engineering and imaging instruments at ESS; ODIN (https://europeanspallationsource.se/instruments/odin) and BEER (https://europeanspallationsource.se/instruments/beer)

Topics for discussion

  • Neutron imaging and diffraction for in-situ/in-operando analysis of engineering materials and processes
(complex flow, phase separations, sintering, welding etc.)
  • Neutron imaging and diffraction for in-situ/in-operando analysis of energy materials and components (batteries, fuel/electrolysis cells, solar cells etc.)
  • Imaging and diffraction for determination of microstructure, grains, texture, composition, pores
  • Imaging and diffraction for determination of strain
  • Imaging of magnetic fields
  • Sample environments for in-situ/in-operando neutron imaging within engineering

The focus of the workshops will be on applications and technologies, relevant for the MedTech industry, that exist or will be available at the large research infrastructures MAX IV and ESS (European Spallation Source) at the University of Lund in Skåne in southern Sweden. The aim is to increase the accessibility and use of these facilities both nationally and internationally by the MedTech industry.

The workshop is to create a network that brings together industries with common interests, which in the long run can generate new platforms and projects.

The aim to increase the MedTech industry’s awareness and knowledge of relevant instruments that are being built at MAX IV and ESS. The workshop also seek to enable participation in the building of test environments at these research facilities, specially designed for the MedTech industry, testing everything from implants to devices and diagnostics.

    Programme

09:00-11:30 Introduction and presentations of technologies and applications
    11:30-12:30 Lunch
12:30-15:00 Discussion forum with experts in scattering, spectroscopy and imaging
15:00-16:00 Optional: Visit the MAX IV facilities

How can MAX IV and ESS boost Nordic food science and technology?

Fully understanding the complexity of food and food processes requires a new toolbox. Sweden has made large investments in research infrastructures that offer unique opportunities for the food industry and food science and technology. These tools can help tackle the challenges for future development of food science relating to:

    • How does processing influence food quality and structure and how can processing be optimized.
    • How does the micro and macro structure of food products and production influence the sensory perception, e.g. taste.
    • How can we enhance the health benefits of food products through optimized composition and processing.
    • How can the environmental impact of food and its production be reduced.
    • How can we improve food packaging to maximize food security and longevity whilst also minimizing environmental impacts.

Now is the time to create the user community in the food sector that can shape the facilities in terms of access, sample environments and instruments. Together it will be discussed how these unique tools can contribute to the ongoing and future research in food science and technology and solving industrial and societal challenges in the food area.

Join for a lunch to lunch workshop on 26th and 27th of March 2019 in the heart of Lund at Kulturen. A tour and presentation of MAX IV and ESS will be organized on the 26th of March followed by a dinner at Flädie Mat & Vingård where scientific discussions will be intertwined with a tour of the Vineyard. The program will consist of inspiring invited talks, contributed short talks and group discussions. It is an aim to publish the results of the discussions in a report.

Researchers and product developers from industry, academic researchers, funding agencies, policy makers and anybody who has an interest in food of the future are welcome. Short contributing talks are welcome.

LINXS is co-organising the workshop together with MAX IV and RISE.
